Behind-the-Wheel Instruction

Drive with Us

Action Driving School offers professional behind-the-wheel instruction. Upon successful completion, the student driver will obtain their white card, a requirement for taking the MN Road Test.

If the student has taken the required 30-hour classroom portion with an instructor associated with Action Driving School, the student will get a QR code to scan to register with us.  Once registered, contract signed, and a 1/3 down payment of BTW cost has been made, the student’s information will be electronically submitted into the MN Driver & Vehicle Services (DVS) online system.

The student’s information will be uploaded electronically onto the DVS (e services) online system. At this point, your DMV can obtain your student’s information so that he/she can take the written test. With a passing score on the written test, a student will receive their driver’s permit.

The student can now start practicing their required 50 hours of drive time (35 daytime and 15 nighttime) with their guardian.

We suggest that the student completes about 10 of these hours before taking BTW with us.

BTW typically consists of three, two-hour drives. This instruction is above and beyond the 50 hours of required practice.

Age Requirements

To take the classroom instruction portion of training, students must be 14 years or older.

At 15 years or older, students may take the State Driving Permit Test (written exam) to obtain their learner’s permit. (Keep in mind, they must be in contract with a driving school company~ like Action Driving School for Behind-the-Wheel. It is the driving school that will electronically submit student information to MN Driver & Vehicle Services.) Once the information is submitted, the DMV will be able to obtain student information when going in to take the written exam.

At 16 years or older, students are eligible for their road test.

Help your teen become a successful driver and secure a Minnesota driver’s license:

  1. Schedule the classroom portion of instruction (30 hours of in-class). (Visit with your local school district; Action Driving School does not offer classroom instruction.)

  2. Once classroom is complete, register with us for the six hours of Behind The Wheel, sign a contract with us, and we can issue your blue card.

  3. Schedule a written (knowledge) test at a state exam office to obtain a learner’s permit. Your teen must have a blue card in order to take written test.

  4. PRACTICE! Help your teen document practice hours using the Supervised Driving Log or the RoadReady app to track their hours.  Your teen needs to drive with you for 50 hours (15 of them being night-time hours). Action Driving recommends getting at least 10 hours of practice in before Behind-the-Wheel.

  5. Complete your six hours of professional Behind-the-Wheel instruction with us to obtain white card.
